Why We Build What We Build
The horse industry is caught in a squeeze that's been tightening for years. Many facility owners don't have clear visibility into their financials and end up spending more than they earn without realizing it. When they feel the pressure, the instinct is to raise prices, often without understanding their true breakeven or where expenses actually land. Those increases ripple through the industry: show costs climb, lesson prices rise, and the people who can afford to participate shrinks.
School horse programs are being cut because operators can't justify the cost. These are the training grounds where future riders and professionals get their start, and without them, entering the sport requires purchasing or leasing a horse just to take a first lesson.
Raising prices isn't the problem. Raising prices without knowing your numbers is. And cutting programs isn't wrong. Cutting them without understanding their true cost and ROI is. You can't manage what you don't measure.
That's why every feature on this roadmap exists: to give you the visibility, data, and confidence to make informed decisions instead of reactive ones.
What We're Working On
HayNet already handles your scheduling, billing, record keeping, prepaid packages, and equine and user management. But we're not stopping there. The features below are what we're actively building. Tools designed to close the gap between running a barn and running a profitable barn.
Everything on this page is informed by conversations with barn owners, trainers, and program directors who are navigating these challenges every day. We don't build features in a vacuum. We build them from the realities of the people who use HayNet.
Business Analytics & Reporting
Running a barn generates an enormous amount of data: lesson counts, training hours, revenue per client, horse workload, seasonal booking patterns. Right now, most of that data is scattered across spreadsheets, bank statements, and memory. HayNet already captures it through your schedule and billing. Analytics turns that captured data into something you can actually use.
We're building reporting tools that surface the metrics that matter most to equestrian businesses. Not generic business dashboards, but reports designed around how barns actually operate and the questions barn owners actually need answered.
Revenue Tracking
See where your income actually comes from — broken down by service type, client, horse, and time period. Spot which programs are profitable and which are quietly draining resources.
Horse Workload Analysis
Track how many hours each horse works, across what types of events, and with which riders. Protect your horses from overwork and make data-informed decisions about when to rest, rotate, or retire.
Client & Program Insights
Understand client booking patterns, retention rates, and program participation. See which lesson tiers drive the most engagement and where clients tend to drop off.
Seasonal Trends
Identify seasonal patterns in bookings, revenue, and utilization so you can plan staffing, pricing, and program adjustments ahead of time rather than reacting after the fact.
Ledger Management
Many equestrian businesses run their finances through a patchwork of tools: QuickBooks for some things, a spreadsheet for others, a notebook for the rest. HayNet already generates invoices and tracks payments, but a true ledger goes further: it gives you a single, organized view of money in and money out across your entire operation.
We're building ledger tools that bridge the gap between HayNet's billing data and the full financial picture of your business. The goal isn't to replace your accountant or your tax software. It's to give you the day-to-day financial clarity that those tools can't provide in real time.
- Income tracking — all revenue captured automatically from invoices, payments, and subscriptions
- Expense logging — record barn expenses (feed, farrier, vet, shavings, fuel) so you can see the full picture, not just the revenue side
- Per-horse cost tracking — understand what each horse actually costs to keep, including board-related expenses, health, and shoeing
- Profit and loss visibility — see whether your operation is actually in the black or just feels like it
- Export-ready data — clean CSV exports that your accountant or QuickBooks can work with directly
Advanced Billing Tools
HayNet's billing engine already handles automated invoicing, split show billing, board billing with add-ons, prepaid packages, and subscriptions. But billing in the equestrian world has edge cases that most software doesn't even know about, and we want to cover them.
We're expanding our billing capabilities to handle the scenarios that barn owners deal with regularly but current tools force them to work around.
- Adjustments and write-offs — apply one-time adjustments to invoices with clear audit trails and reason tracking
- More flexible billing cycles — support for billing periods that don't fit neatly into monthly cycles
- Deeper show billing controls — more granular split methods and multi-show tracking across a season
- Deposit tracking support — take deposits and have them apply seamlessly to the corresponding future invoices
- Automated reminders and escalation — configurable reminder sequences for outstanding invoices
Every billing improvement we make starts from the same principle: if a charge happens as part of running your barn, HayNet should be able to capture, track, and invoice it without you needing to build a workaround.
Educational Tools
Running a profitable equestrian business requires a unique combination of horse knowledge and business acumen. The equine industry doesn't come with a playbook for managing finances, setting sustainable pricing, or evaluating program profitability, and too often those lessons are learned the hard way through costly mistakes.
We're building educational resources directly into HayNet. Not generic business courses, but practical, equestrian-specific guidance that meets you where you are and helps you get where you need to be.
Breakeven Calculators
Interactive tools that help you understand exactly what it costs to keep each horse, run each program, and operate each month. Know your number before you set your prices.
Pricing Guidance
Frameworks for setting lesson rates, board prices, and service fees that are grounded in your actual costs — not what the barn down the road charges or what feels right.
Business Health Checks
Periodic assessments that flag potential issues before they become crises — like when a program is consistently running below breakeven or when a client's account has been overdue for too long.
Industry Benchmarking
Anonymized, aggregated data across HayNet users to help you understand how your operation compares. Are your lesson rates competitive? Is your client retention typical? Context changes decisions.
Help Shape What We Build
Everything on this page came from real conversations with equestrian professionals. If you're dealing with a challenge that these tools don't address, or if you have ideas about how they should work, we want to hear from you.
HayNet isn't built by people who think they know what barns need. It's built by people who ask what barns need and then go build it. That process doesn't work without your input.
